The Energy Savings Scheme is a NSW Government program that makes energy-efficient upgrades cheaper for homes and small businesses. It sits under the NSW Energy Security Safeguard, alongside the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme.What is the NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS)?
When an eligible upgrade saves energy, it creates Energy Savings Certificates. The value of those certificates is taken off the price of your upgrade up front, so the discount is already in your quote. You don't apply to the government or wait for a cheque.

No. The discount is taken off your quote before you pay, and the certificate paperwork is handled for you. You don't apply to the government yourself.
The most common upgrades are replacing an old electric or gas hot water system with an efficient heat pump, and installing or replacing air conditioning with an efficient reverse-cycle system. What you can claim depends on the product, your property and what you're replacing.
Yes. Eligible small businesses can access ESS discounts on hot water and air conditioning upgrades. Check your eligibility and we'll confirm what applies to your premises.
No. The ESS commercial lighting method ended on 31 March 2026, so we don't offer LED lighting upgrades in NSW. Our NSW upgrades are hot water, air conditioning and solar batteries.
No. They are separate state schemes that work in a similar way. The ESS applies in NSW and the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program applies in Victoria. If you're in Victoria, see our VEU rebate page.
